Kengal Anjaneya Swami temple

Kengal is a small village in Channapatna Taluk of Ramanagara District. Kengal is at a distance of 50 kilometers from Bangalore and frequent buses are there from Bangalore to Kengal.

Kengal Anjaneya Swami temple present at Kengal is popular for relieving the devotees from their sufferings of day to day life. The temple is believed to be constructed during the period of Hoysala kings. Legend says that Vyasa Maharshi did penance for Lord Hanuman at this place. Devotion of Lord Vyasa pleased Lord Hanuman and he is believed to be manifested in the red stone. In kannada, kengallu means red stone and may be because of that the village got the name Kengal over a period of time. Also, the temple history says that the face of Lord Hanuman is turning to East from North and other half of Lord’s face is clearly visible.

Another architectural marvel of this temple is that on the day of Makara Sankranthi, sun rays will fall on the shrine of Anjaneya Swami similar to Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple of Bangalore.

Kengal Anjaneya Swami temple was visited by many celebrities in the past and the list includes Dr. Babu Rajendra Prasad (First President of India), Neelam Sanjeev Reddy (Former President of India), Smt. Indira Gandhi (Ex Prime Minister of India), Murarji Desai (Ex Prime Minister of India), and Rajeev Gandhi (Ex Prime Minister of India). Late Kengal Hanumanthappa, second chief minister of Karnataka state was born after his parents prayed Lord Hanuman of this temple and hence the name Kengal Hanumanthappa was kept for him as the child was born with the blessings of Lord Kengal Anjaneya Swami.

Kengal village can be conveniently reached from Bangalore and the temple can be visited in a day’s time from Bangalore. Temple will be open from morning 7:00AM to night 7:30PM. Temple is managed by Endowments department of Government of Karnataka. It is not allowed to do Videography and Photography inside the temple.
